Gotcha Clouser

Shrimp · Bonefish · Redfish · Sea Trout · Snook · Permit · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater flats hook, 2-6
  • Thread Pink 140 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Silver/chrome material (1 pair dumbbell (Clouser-style))
  • Wing Tan/pink craft fur (1 sparse clump)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands Krystal Flash)
  • Body Pearl anti static bag strip (1 strand pearl braid/Diamond Braid)
  • Head Pink ears (thread)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lash the dumbbell eyes on top about one-third back from the eye so the fly rides hook-point up.
  2. At the bend tie in pearl braid and wrap it forward to just behind the eyes, then figure-8 around and in front of the eyes; tie off.
  3. Invert the hook. Tie a sparse clump of tan craft fur in front of the eyes so it sweeps back past the bend as the wing.
  4. Add a few strands of pearl flash along the wing, tail length.
  5. Optionally top with a pinch of pink craft fur for the classic gotcha accent.
  6. Build a smooth pink thread head, whip finish, and cement.
  7. Check that the wing rides above the point and keep the whole fly sparse.
