Classic Recipe

  • Hook Wet fly / mayfly hook, 8-12
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Cock pheasant tail fibres (3)
  • Rib Fine gold wire or oval gold tinsel (4-5 turns)
  • Body Golden olive seal's fur with a touch of fiery brown (tapered)
  • Body hackle/collar Hot orange cock hackle (1-2 turns)
  • Front hackle Grey mallard flank, tied in by the tip and swept back (1-2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Run the thread to above the barb and tie in 3 cock pheasant tail fibres for a short tail.
  2. Tie in the gold rib at the tail, then dub a tapered body of golden-olive seal's fur blended with a little fiery brown over the rear two-thirds.
  3. Rib the body forward with the gold wire in 4-5 open turns for segmentation and flash, and tie off.
  4. Wind one or two turns of hot orange cock hackle at the front of the body to suggest legs.
  5. Tie in a grey mallard flank feather by its tip in front of the orange, wind one or two turns and stroke the long barbs back over the body.
  6. Form a small head, whip finish and varnish.
