Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved/2X-long nymph hook (jig optional), weighted, #6-12
  • Thread match body (golden brown, black, or brown) 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Bead/weight Tungsten bead + lead-free wire (1 + several turns)
  • Tails Biots or knotted flex-floss (2, split)
  • Rear legs/antennae Bundled and knotted flex-floss legs (1-2 per side (rear))
  • Abdomen Flattened dubbing or nymph-body material (dubbed wide/flat)
  • Rib Wire (4-5 turns)
  • Wing case Thin skin / turkey (pulled over)
  • Thorax Buggy dubbing (golden stone) (dubbed fuller)
  • Front legs Knotted flex-floss / rubber legs (1-2 per side)

How to tie it

  1. Add a tungsten bead and lead-free wire so this stonefly nymph gets to the bottom fast.
  2. Tie in two split biot tails, then tie in the signature knotted flex-floss legs trailing at the REAR (Joe Goodspeed's key trigger when fish are keyed on stones).
  3. Tie in the wire rib and dub a wide, FLATTENED abdomen to match a real stonefly's low profile.
  4. Rib the wire forward in 4-5 turns to segment the abdomen and add durability.
  5. Tie in a thin-skin wing case, dub a fuller golden-stone thorax, and add knotted flex-floss front legs.
  6. Pull the wing case forward over the thorax and tie it down behind the bead, whip finish.
  7. The flattened body and the extra knotted rear legs are what separate this from a generic stone nymph.
