Classic Recipe

  • Hook 3X-long nymph hook (Dai-Riki #285 or similar), #8-16
  • Thread yellow 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Black bead (7/64 in (optional))
  • Weight Lead-free wire .020 (8-10 turns)
  • Tails Amber goose biots (2, split V)
  • Rib Gold Ultra Wire (brassie) (4-5 turns)
  • Abdomen Golden stone Australian possum dubbing (dubbed)
  • Back/wing pads Dyed-yellow pheasant tail fibers (pulled over)
  • Thorax Golden stone Australian possum dubbing (dubbed fuller)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a black bead to the eye, wrap 8-10 turns of.020 lead-free wire, and jam it into the bead for weight.
  2. Tie in two amber goose biots at the bend, splayed into a short V tail.
  3. Tie in the gold wire rib and a bunch of dyed-yellow pheasant-tail fibers (for the back), then dub a golden-possum abdomen over the back half.
  4. Pull the pheasant-tail fibers forward over the abdomen as a shellback and rib the gold wire forward in 4-5 turns to lock it and segment the body.
  5. Dub a fuller thorax of golden-stone possum, then pull a second, separate section of pheasant tail over as the wing pads.
  6. Tie down the wing pads behind the bead, whip finish, and pick out the thorax for a leggy, buggy look.
  7. The two shellback pull-overs give the segmented abdomen and blocky thorax of a natural golden stone nymph.
