Golden Spinner

Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 14-16
  • Thread Primrose 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Pale ginger cock hackle fibers (3-4 fibers)
  • Rib Fine flat gold tinsel (fine)
  • Body Pale yellow-gold floss (1 strand)
  • Hackle Pale ginger cock hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap thread to the bend and tie in three or four pale ginger tail fibers, splayed slightly and a full shank length long. Spinner tails sit long and spread.
  2. Tie in the fine gold tinsel, then wrap the pale yellow floss body forward to the 75% mark.
  3. Rib with 4 evenly spaced turns of gold tinsel to suggest the translucent segmentation of the spent fly.
  4. Wind the pale ginger hackle 4-5 turns at the head; for flush-floating spinners clip a shallow V underneath.
  5. Whip finish and lacquer the head.
