As tied by Piscator Flies

  • Hook Mustad S60-3399A (a curved hook such as the C49S also works), 12-18
  • Thread Dark olive 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Gold brass, 3.0 mm for size 12 (Tungsten for a heavier fly)
  • Tail Ringneck Pheasant Tail (About 5 fibres, about the shank length)
  • Body Dark olive thread (Pheasant tail fibres folded back to build the taper)
  • Rib Gold Ultrawire (4 or 5 open turns)
  • Wing case Chartreuse pearl flash (About 5 strands)
  • Thorax Bronze-olive Diamond Dub (Ice Dub or Arizona synthetic dubbing also work)
  • Legs Hen hackle fibres (Set in the middle of the thorax)
  • Shell Solarez thin hard UV resin (Head cement or epoxy also work)

How to tie it

  1. Fit the bead and hook. Start dark olive thread behind the bead.
  2. Tie in about five ringneck pheasant tail fibres on top, about the length of the shank.
  3. Tie in the gold wire along the near side.
  4. Wind touching turns of thread down to the bend and back up behind the bead, folding the tail fibres back to build the taper.
  5. Rib the body with the wire in four or five open turns. Tie it down firmly behind and in front, pull it back and wrap over it, then break it off.
  6. Tie in about five strands of chartreuse pearl flash under the thorax area and park them.
  7. Dub the thorax with bronze-olive Diamond Dub.
  8. Tie in hen hackle fibres on each side for legs, matching their length. Trim the butts and add a little more dubbing to hide the join.
  9. Pull the flash over the thorax and secure it, then whip finish.
  10. Coat the flash back with thin UV resin and cure it.
