Golden Nugget Shrimp

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/shrimp hook, #10-16
  • Thread tan or orange 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (or gold tungsten) (1, sized to hook)
  • Weight Lead-free wire (several turns (optional))
  • Tail/mouthparts Partridge or scud-dubbing pick-out (small tuft)
  • Body Sow-scud / shrimp dubbing (golden-tan/orange blend) (dubbed plump)
  • Shellback Scud back / Magic Shrimp Foil (1 strip pulled over)
  • Rib Fine mono or wire (4-5 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold bead to the eye (add a few turns of lead-free wire behind it for weight) so the shrimp gets down.
  2. Tie in a small tuft of partridge fibers at the bend for tail/mouthparts, then tie in the shellback strip and the rib.
  3. Dub a plump, tapered body of golden-tan/orange sow-scud dubbing over the curved shank.
  4. Pull the shellback strip forward over the top of the body to form the segmented carapace.
  5. Counter-wrap the mono/wire rib forward in 4-5 turns over the shellback to lock it and segment the body.
  6. Tie off behind the bead and pick out the belly dubbing to suggest legs.
  7. The gold bead plus golden dubbing give the 'nugget' glow that triggers stillwater trout.
