Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly hook, small, 14-18
  • Thread Grey / olive 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Grey hackle fibres (short)
  • Rib Fine gold tinsel (4-5 turns)
  • Body Pale green floss (slim)
  • Hackle Grey hen (sparse beard/collar)
  • Wing Light slate quill slips (pair)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in a short grey tail at the bend.
  2. Tie in fine gold tinsel, then wind a slim pale green floss body forward, stopping short of the eye.
  3. Spiral the gold rib forward in 4-5 even turns and tie off.
  4. Apply a sparse grey hen hackle as a beard (or a light collar).
  5. Set a matched pair of light slate quill slips low over the body as the wing; build a small neat head, whip finish and varnish.
