Classic Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead/salmon iron, 4-8
  • Thread Black 140 denier / 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Golden pheasant crest (1)
  • Rib Small oval gold tinsel (1)
  • Body Medium gold mylar tinsel (1)
  • Throat Bright orange saddle hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Wing Brown bear hair or red squirrel tail (sparse clump)
  • Cheeks Jungle cock (optional) (2)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a golden pheasant crest at the bend as the tail, curving upward.
  2. Tie in the oval gold rib, then wrap the flat gold mylar body in smooth touching turns from the tail to two eye-widths behind the eye.
  3. Counter-wrap the oval tinsel over the body in 5-6 evenly spaced turns, counter-wrapping protects the fragile mylar from teeth.
  4. Tie a bunch of bright orange hackle fibers under the shank as a throat, reaching halfway down the shank.
  5. Stack a sparse wing of brown bear or red squirrel tail and tie it in extending to the bend; add jungle cock cheeks if you have them.
  6. Form a neat head, whip finish, and coat with cement or UV resin.
