Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long nymph hook (e.g. Mustad 3906B, TMC 5262), #8-16
  • Thread brown or black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Hare's mask guard hairs (small bunch, half shank)
  • Rib Fine oval gold tinsel or gold wire (4-5 turns)
  • Abdomen Hare's ear dubbing (dubbed tapered)
  • Wing case Mottled turkey tail (1 slip)
  • Thorax Hare's ear dubbing (dubbed fuller, picked out)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a short tail of hare's mask guard hairs about half a shank long at the bend.
  2. Tie in the gold rib at the tail, then dub a slim tapered abdomen of hare's ear dubbing over the back two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Counter-wrap the gold rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns and tie off (segments the body and adds flash).
  4. Tie in a mottled turkey tail slip for the wing case, pointing back over the abdomen.
  5. Dub a fuller, buggier thorax of hare's ear dubbing over the front third.
  6. Pull the turkey wing case forward over the thorax and tie it down behind the eye.
  7. Whip finish, then pick out the thorax dubbing with a needle so the spiky guard hairs suggest legs and gills.
