Gold Bead Flash-a-Bugger

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 4X-long streamer hook, #4-10
  • Thread black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Weight Lead-free wire (8-10 turns (optional))
  • Tail Marabou (1 plume, shank length)
  • Tail flash Krystal Flash / Flashabou (6-8 strands mixed into tail)
  • Body Estaz / Crystal Chenille (flash chenille) (wrapped)
  • Rib Fine wire (4-5 turns (optional, over hackle))
  • Hackle Saddle hackle (matching) (1, palmered)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold bead to the eye and add 8-10 turns of lead-free wire behind it for weight, shoving the wraps into the bead.
  2. Tie in a shank-length marabou tail and mix 6-8 strands of Krystal Flash into it so the tail sparkles.
  3. Tie in a saddle hackle by the tip at the bend.
  4. Wrap a body of Estaz or Crystal (flash) chenille forward to just behind the bead, this flashy chenille is what makes it a 'Flash-a-Bugger' rather than a plain Bugger.
  5. Palmer the hackle forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns.
  6. Optionally counter-wrap fine wire forward through the hackle to lock it in for durability, then tie off behind the bead.
  7. Whip finish; the flash chenille body plus flashy tail throw a lot of sparkle for stained or fast water.
