Materials
Cone head Gray or black cone head (One large)
Lead wire n/a (A quarter to three eighths of an inch of wraps at the front of the shank)
Wire Copper wire (One length for the rib)
Laser Dub Sculpin (Enough for a thick body)
Hen hackle, speckled Speckled brown/tan hen hackle (One feather, tied in by the tip)
Rubber legs, striped Speckled tan rubber legs striped (Two pairs, trimmed to about a shank length)
Rabbit strip Grizzly (barred) rabbit strip (One strip about two inches of leather)
How to tie it
Put a quarter to three eighths of an inch of lead wraps on the FRONT of the shank only, then squeeze them together. Slide the large cone on, push the lead up into the cone to check the fit, then slide the cone back off, put CA glue on the shank and push the cone into place. Set it dead square, and if it must lean, let it tilt slightly downward so a touch more weight rides under the shank.
Start the thread behind the cone, wrap forward over the lead with wide wraps to help cover it, then run the thread all the way back and around the gape well into the bend, building a small thread bump there. That bump stops the rabbit wing from wrapping around the bend later and spinning the fly.
Tie in the copper wire roughly level with the barb (not behind the body) so it does not kink the wing over when you rib it, winding it forward and back to lock it in.
Dub a thick sculpin-colored Laser Dub body: put your first wrap or two behind the copper wire, then work forward to where the lead stops. Do not be shy about bulk.
Tie in two pairs of striped rubber legs at the front of the body, long for now, positioning them so they sit out to the sides.
Drop a little CA glue on the leg tie-in, add more dubbing in front of it, and reposition everything before the glue sets. Trim the front legs off to give yourself working room, then trim all legs to about a shank length so they stick out and vibrate rather than folding back.
Trim a little off the base of the speckled hen feather, tie it in by the tip in front of the legs, trim the tip out, then fold the barbs back and sweep them carefully around and in front of the legs.
Prep a grizzly rabbit strip about two inches of leather, with the fur lying back and a little fur stripped off the front end so you have a clean tie-in. Square the end, then push the leather onto the hook point right down the middle of the strip and slide it into position at the front. Take the hook out of the vise to work the strip on, then remount it upside down and secure the strip in front with firm wraps.
Razor off any leather sticking up at the head, push the stub down and back into the cone with your thread and fingernail so it is durable.
Flip the hook back upright and wrap the copper wire forward through the wing, using a bodkin to sweep hair out of the way ahead of each wrap and popping out any trapped legs. Keep the wing riding square on top.
Tie the wire off behind the cone, whip finish and cement.
