Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL-4XL streamer hook, 6-12
  • Thread Black or color to match 6/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold or black tungsten (optional) bead (1)
  • Tail Marabou (black/olive/brown) with a few Krystal Flash (one shank length)
  • Body African goat/angora seal-sub dubbing (spun rope)
  • Hackle Saddle hackle to match body (one feather palmered)
  • Rib Fine copper wire (one strand)

How to tie it

  1. Slide on the optional tungsten bead, mount the hook, and start thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in a marabou tail about one shank length with a few strands of Krystal Flash, then catch in the copper wire and a saddle hackle by the tip.
  3. Spin the coarse, translucent goat dubbing into a shaggy rope and wrap it forward to just behind the bead for a buggy, seal-like body.
  4. Palmer the saddle hackle forward in 5-6 open turns, then counter-wrap the copper rib forward through the hackle to lock the stem against toothy fish.
  5. Tie off the rib and hackle behind the bead and pick out the goat dubbing so it looks alive and spiky.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and snip.
