Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 3 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black 2mm foam (one strip, two segments)
  • Glitter/flash Black or pearl Ice Dub / glitter (sparse dusting)
  • Legs Black round rubber (2-3 strands)
  • Indicator Orange or pink foam/poly (small post)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start thread, and bind a black foam strip at the bend, wrapping thread forward to leave a waist at mid-shank.
  2. Fold the foam forward to form the fat rear gaster, lock it at the waist, and dust the tie-down with a wisp of glittery Ice Dub for sparkle.
  3. Figure-8 two or three rubber legs across the waist, splayed to each side.
  4. Fold the foam forward again over the front to build the smaller head segment and tie it off behind the eye.
  5. Set a short orange foam tab on top as a hi-vis sighter so you can track this low-floating ant.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye, snip, and trim the legs to a shank length.
