Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved caddis/scud hook (barbless), weighted, #10-14
  • Thread olive or brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Weight Lead wire underbody (several turns (fast-sink))
  • Body Glister / SLF sparkle dubbing (dubbed, green)
  • Rib Fine wire or mono (4-5 turns)
  • Shellback/hot spot Colored thread or Flexi-Floss collar (at head (optional))
  • Thorax Dark dubbing (peacock or dark hare) (small, at head)

How to tie it

  1. Build a weighted underbody with several turns of lead wire so this Czech nymph sinks fast to feeding fish.
  2. Tie in a fine wire rib at the bend.
  3. Dub a plump, tapered body of green Glister (sparkle) dubbing over the back three-quarters of the curved shank to mimic a free-swimming caddis larva.
  4. Counter-wrap the wire rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns to segment the body and add durability.
  5. Dub a small dark thorax at the head (peacock or dark hare's ear) to suggest the larva's dark head/legs.
  6. Whip finish; the sparkle dubbing catches light like the translucent gut of a real Rhyacophila larva.
