Classic Recipe

  • Hook long-shank Dee salmon iron, 1/0-4
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Silver thread and lemon floss (few turns)
  • Tail Golden pheasant topping + breast feather tip (1 + 1)
  • Body Rear third light orange seal's fur, remainder light claret seal's fur (small clumps)
  • Ribs Flat silver tinsel and silver twist (1 each)
  • Body hackle Black heron substitute (1)
  • Throat Widgeon (1-2 turns)
  • Wings Cinnamon turkey tail strips, set flat (2)

How to tie it

  1. Wind a tag of silver thread and lemon floss, then tie in the tail.
  2. Dub the rear third of the body with light orange seal's fur and the front two-thirds with light claret seal's fur, keeping the body slim and ropey.
  3. Tie in the long black heron substitute at the start of the claret and palmer it forward as you rib with flat silver, then lock it with counter-turns of silver twist. The twist armors the soft stem against teeth and casting.
  4. Pick out the seal's fur lightly so it halos through the hackle.
  5. Wind 1-2 turns of widgeon as a throat.
  6. Set the cinnamon turkey strips flat and horizontally over the body Dee-style, form a small head, and whip finish.
