Glass Zebra Midge

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard curved scud/midge hook, 16-22
  • Thread Black or red 10/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver-lined clear glass (1, small)
  • Body Black or red thread (smooth taper)
  • Rib Fine silver wire (one strand)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the glass bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start thread behind the bead.
  2. Catch in a strand of fine silver wire and bind it down the shank to the bend.
  3. Wind the thread forward and back in smooth turns to build a slim, tapered body up to the bead.
  4. Counter-wrap the silver wire forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns for the zebra segmentation, then helicopter it off to break the wire clean.
  5. Take a couple anchoring wraps, whip finish behind the bead, and snip.
  6. A drop of head cement on the thread body keeps this tiny fly bombproof.
