Ginger Snap

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph hook, 12-16
  • Thread Tan or hot orange 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Copper or gold slotted tungsten (1, sized to hook)
  • Weight Lead-free wire (5-6 turns (optional))
  • Tail Coq de Leon (small tuft)
  • Body Peacock quill (natural) (one stem)
  • Thorax Ginger hare's ear in a dubbing loop (spun collar)
  • Hot spot Orange thread (collar behind bead)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted tungsten bead on the jig hook, mount it, and add a few optional turns of lead-free wire under the bead; start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in a short Coq de Leon tail at the bend, about half a shank length, splayed slightly.
  3. Bind in a stripped peacock quill and wrap it forward in even, overlapping turns to build a segmented body over the back two-thirds, then tie off.
  4. Coat the quill body with a thin layer of UV resin or head cement so it survives toothy fish.
  5. Spin ginger hare's ear in a dubbing loop and wind a shaggy thorax collar, then pick it out spiky with a bodkin.
  6. Build a small hot-orange thread hot spot behind the bead, whip finish, and snip.
