Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater hook, 2-6
  • Thread Clear/tan 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Mono barbell (burnt) or bead-chain (1 pair)
  • Antennae/tail Tan/pearl Krystal Flash and pale bucktail (sparse clump)
  • Body Pale tan/cream EP fibers or craft fur (shank length)
  • Shellback Clear/pearl mylar or thin skin (one strip)
  • Rib Clear mono (one strand)
  • Legs/hackle Grizzly or tan saddle (one feather palmered)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook point-up, start thread near the eye, and lash a pair of mono or bead-chain eyes on top so the fly rides hook-up over grass flats.
  2. At the bend, tie in a sparse clump of tan bucktail and a few strands of Krystal Flash a shank length long for the antennae and tail.
  3. Bind in the clear mono rib and the mylar shellback at the bend, then dub or tie in pale EP fibers to form a plump, translucent body forward to the eyes.
  4. Palmer a grizzly hackle over the body for legs, then stroke the fibers down and sweep them under.
  5. Pull the mylar shellback over the top and lock it with 4-5 open counter-turns of the mono rib to segment the back, then tie off.
  6. Build a small head behind the eyes, whip finish, and coat the shellback with UV resin for a shrimpy sheen.
