Ghost Midge

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 3 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard curved scud/midge hook, 18-24
  • Thread White 12/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver or white glass bead (1, small)
  • Body White thread (smooth taper)
  • Rib Pearl or fine silver wire/Krystal Flash (one strand)
  • Thorax/wing buds White or clear Antron (sparse)

How to tie it

  1. Slip the glass bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start white thread behind the bead.
  2. Wind the thread in smooth, slightly overlapping turns down around the bend and back, building a thin, translucent, tapered body.
  3. Catch in a single strand of pearl flash at the rear and rib it forward in 5-6 even turns for segmentation, then tie off.
  4. Bind in a tiny pinch of white Antron just behind the bead to suggest emerging gills or wing buds; use half the amount you think.
  5. Sweep the Antron back, take two anchoring wraps, and whip finish behind the bead.
  6. Add a pinprick of head cement to the thread body so the ghostly translucency survives fishing.
