On a 3x-long streamer hook, wind seven or eight turns of 0.025 lead wire at the rear of the shank, which is the front of the finished crawdad. Start thread in a colour matching the body (tan here) and build a dam in front of and behind the wire.
Wax the thread and dub a small bump at the very back of the hook with the body dubbing. Its only job is to spread the claws apart.
Claws: two micro rabbit zonker strips, each a little longer than the hook, with a little fur stripped from the tie-in end. Bind one on each side of the bump.
Bind in a length of diamond braid at the same point for the rib.
Wax the thread again and dub a thick body forward to just short of where the eyes will sit. It will take two or three applications; a tight noodle is not needed, the aim is bulk.
Wrap the diamond braid forward in open turns so it gives a hint of colour over the bulky body, tie it off, and trim.
Figure-8 the dumbbell eyes in near the hook eye. They are there for weight and to turn the fly hook-point up.
Bind in four strands of thin Crystal Flash, then the rubber silly legs: two swept back and two pointing forward past the eyes like antennae. Do not worry if they stick up; the next dubbing lays them down.
Dub a little more body over the leg tie-in, a couple of turns behind the legs and one or two through them, so the forward pair still leans forward.
Whip finish right behind the hook eye, leaving enough room to thread a tippet. Trim the Crystal Flash to about a body length and shorten the antennae to taste.
