Materials
Lead-free wire n/a (About eight wraps of 0.015 or 0.020)
Hackle fibers Brown hackle fibers (A small bunch for the tail)
Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (Three or four strands)
Turkey wing slip, mottled Mottled brown thin skin (One slip about a quarter inch wide for the lower wingcase)
Antron or white synthetic yarn White poly yarn (A small amount for the cotton top)
Hen hackle Brown hen hackle (One soft feather for the throat)
How to tie it
Put about eight wraps of 0.020 (or 0.015) wire on the shank, keeping them toward the rear so the head area stays slim. Start black thread, build a thread dam behind the wire, wrap over it and dam the front as well.
With the thread at the rear, tie in a small bunch of brown hackle fibers as a tail, angled slightly downward, and tidy any strays with a couple of extra wraps.
Tie in a slip of mottled turkey about a quarter inch wide (a touch narrower than the hook gap) with the dark side down, right on top of the tail. Take a couple of check wraps to confirm it is centered on top, then secure it back over the tail and bury the butts.
Tie in three or four strands of peacock herl at the rear, having first snipped off the brittle tips. Move the thread to about the 60% point, spin the herl into a loose rope and wrap it forward to the thread.
Tie the herl down but do not cut it. You will use it again for the thorax.
Pull the turkey slip forward over the herl, take a couple of loose wraps to check that it is centered, then lock it with a tight wrap under and a tight wrap over. Trim the excess turkey.
Tie in the white Antron on top by the smallest amount of material you can, keeping it centered, and check that enough white will show when it is folded forward. Bury the butt.
Give the remaining peacock herl another twist and take about three wraps to build the thorax, stopping well short of the eye, then tie off and trim.
Prepare a brown hen feather by stripping the barbs off one side, tie it in, and take two full wraps, stroking the barbs down. Tie off, trim, and pinch the barbs down and back into a beard/throat rather than a full collar.
Fold the white Antron forward over the thorax, check the position with a loose wrap, lock it down with tight wraps and trim it off. Take the thread to the eye, ramp it back to bury the butt, whip finish and add head cement.
