Gee's Supafly Stone

Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard/2X-long dry fly or hopper hook, #6-8
  • Thread tan or brown 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Body Foam (layered strip, golden or salmon)
  • Underbody/rib Dubbing or thread segmentation (as needed)
  • Wing Elk hair or synthetic (1 tuft over back)
  • Legs Round rubber legs (2-3 per side)
  • Indicator Bright foam or poly post (1 small patch on top)

How to tie it

  1. Lash a foam strip along the shank and segment it with tight thread wraps to form a buoyant, banded stonefly body.
  2. Tie in a downwing of elk hair (or synthetic) over the back, extending to about the bend, to give the adult-stone silhouette.
  3. Splay two to three rubber legs per side for lifelike kicking movement.
  4. Add a small bright foam or poly patch on top as a visibility indicator.
  5. Build a neat head, whip finish, and cement; keep the profile chunky so it floats a dropper.
  6. The all-foam build makes it nearly unsinkable and very durable, ideal as the buoyant half of a hopper-dropper.
