How to tie it
Start the thread just behind the eye and note that point: it is where the body will stop before the collar and head, so the eye does not get crowded. Lay a clean base back to the bend.
Tail: pinch off a tuft of the soft plumage (chickabou) from the base of a pheasant rump feather and trim the butts square for a clean tie-in. Bind it in at the bend about one-third of a shank long, erring long rather than short so it reads as a tail.
Bind in the brown UTC small wire for the rib and advance the thread over the butts to clean up the underbody.
Blend the Hareline brown olive dubbing with the SLF spikey squirrel natural fox (Gartside's ratio: one part rabbit to two parts squirrel). Dub a rough, buggy noodle and wrap it forward with a slight taper up to the reference point behind the eye. Do not chase a neat noodle; stray fibres make it better. Half hitch and let the bobbin hang.
Rib the wire forward in open turns for durability, tie it off, then brush the body out with a dubbing brush.
Collar: choose a pheasant rump feather with some colour in it, strip off the underplume (save it), strip the lower fibres and snip the stem for a clean tie-in point. Bind it in by the tip and wind one and a half to two turns with hackle pliers, no more. Tie off, snip the stem, and sweep the fibres back. The fibres should reach at least to the tail tip; longer is fine.
Head: take one of the fine aftershaft feathers from the pheasant rump, strip a little from the bottom of the stem to give you something to hold, and bind it in. Wrap it forward gently with hackle pliers, wetting your fingers and stroking the fibres back after each turn, all the way to just behind the eye. Tie off as close to the eye as you can and snip.
Clean up the head and whip finish twice.
