Garbage Sow Bug

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 5 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/nymph hook, 14-18
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Shellback Clear scud back thin skin (Strip of plastic bag / scud back)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (Fine wire or mono)
  • Body Gray flotation (Muskrat/sowbug dubbing, flat)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start the thread and lay a base back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a clear plastic shellback strip and a fine wire rib at the bend.
  3. Dub a wide, flat body forward. Sowbugs are broader than they are tall, so spread the dubbing out sideways rather than building it up.
  4. Pull the plastic shellback flat over the top and bind it at the eye.
  5. Rib forward in 5-6 open turns to segment the back, then break off the wire.
  6. Pick out the sides for legs, trim the top flat and whip finish.
