Dumbbell eyes Red dumbbell eyes (Small, 6/32 inch)
Rabbit strip White rabbit zonker strip (One long strip for tail and back)
Marabou Cream (Cahill) (Three or four feathers for the body)
Polar Flash Pearl (2003) flash (A few strands each side)
Ultra wire White ultra wire (One length for the rib)
How to tie it
Start red thread on a size 4 streamer hook and wrap back to the hook bend.
Tie in a white rabbit strip at the bend with six or seven good tight turns, leaving the forward end long enough to reach past the hook eye. Pull that long section back over the tail and out of the way for now.
Tie in a few strands of pearl Polar Flash and run them down both sides as a tail highlight. Leave them long, they get trimmed at the end.
Tie in the white ultra wire at the bend, making sure it is locked in tight since it forms the rib and holds the whole fly together.
Take one cream Cahill marabou feather, lay it under the shank at the bend so the tips run a good inch past the bend, tie it down and clip the excess.
Pull the rabbit strip forward over the top, take one wrap of the ultra wire over it to pin it down, then fold the strip back again, tie in another clump of marabou, and repeat. Keep alternating strip forward, wire wrap, strip back, new marabou clump, three or four times until you reach the front of the shank.
Stop short of the eye to leave room for the dumbbell eyes. Take a few final wraps with the white wire, tie it off and trim, then cut the rabbit strip off leaving just enough at the head to flare back.
Tie in the small red dumbbell eyes in that front space with plenty of figure-eight wraps, tying in front of and behind them so they are locked solid.
Build up a red head with thread, whip finish either in front of or behind the eyes, cement, then trim the tail and flash to about three inches total.
