Classic Recipe

  • Hook 3X-long streamer hook, #2-6
  • Thread yellow or white GSP 100-200 (to spin/pack deer hair)

Materials

  • Tail Yellow marabou (1 plume, full but not bulky)
  • Body Sparkle braid / pearl Crystaline Chenille (wrapped to 5/8" behind eye)
  • Underwing Calf tail (1 sparse clump)
  • Wing Mallard flank dyed yellow (1 feather, concave down)
  • Head/collar Yellow deer belly hair (1-2 spun clumps)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a fairly full yellow marabou tail just above the barb, keeping it slender so it breathes rather than fans wide.
  2. Wrap sparkle braid or pearl chenille forward to about 5/8 inch behind the eye to make a thin flashy body.
  3. Tie a sparse calf-tail underwing on top for a bit of stiffness that keeps the overwing from fouling.
  4. Lay a single yellow-dyed mallard flank feather flat over the back, tips even with the tail and the concave side facing DOWN so the wing sits low and flat.
  5. Spin and stack a clump of yellow deer belly hair to form the collar, tips swept back, and pack it tight against the wing.
  6. Whip finish and trim the head flat on top and bottom into a wide, blocky wedge (this is what makes it plane and dart).
  7. Note Galloup ties this with no dubbed body forward of the wing, keeping the head clean; the flat head is what makes it dive and jink on the strip.
