Classic Recipe

  • Hook streamer hooks, articulated (rear rides tips-up), #2-6 (front), #4-8 (rear)
  • Thread match body (olive, brown, black, tan) 6/0 (140 denier) or GSP

Materials

  • Rear tail Marabou (1-2 plumes, shank length)
  • Flash Flashabou (few strands each side)
  • Rear body Deer hair (spun) or foam (buoyant collar/body)
  • Rear hackle Schlappen or saddle (1-2 feathers)
  • Connection Articulation wire (1 loop)
  • Front body Ice Dub / chenille (dubbed)
  • Front hackle Schlappen (1-2 feathers palmered)
  • Legs Rubber legs (2 per side)
  • Eyes/head Lead eyes or cone (front only) (1)

How to tie it

  1. REAR HOOK: tie in a marabou tail with a few strands of flash for a shank-length rear.
  2. Build a BUOYANT rear body, spin a deer-hair collar (or add a foam insert) so the back end wants to float, then palmer a soft hackle and whip finish.
  3. FRONT HOOK: join the rear with articulation wire and lash it down so the rear hinges freely.
  4. Weight the FRONT only with lead eyes or a cone near the eye so the head sinks while the tail rises.
  5. Dub the front body, palmer a schlappen collar, and add two rubber legs per side.
  6. Whip finish; the weighted-front/buoyant-rear balance makes the tail kick UP on every pause.
  7. This automatic jackknife action is the whole design, the fly hunts on the pause with no rod work needed.
