Galloup's Flat Head Kitty

Dry Fly · Streamer · Smallmouth Bass · Largemouth Bass · Pike · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook streamer/shank front, trailing stinger hook (articulated), #2-1/0 (front) with rear stinger hook
  • Thread match body (white, black, brown, olive, yellow) GSP 100-200 (to spin deer hair)

Materials

  • Rear tails Two deceiver-style saddle feathers (splayed, on stinger)
  • Flash Flashabou (generous bunch between tails)
  • Body Synthetic (Ice Dub / UV Polar Chenille) (flowing)
  • Wing/collar Marabou or synthetic baitfish fiber (full)
  • Connection Articulation wire/shank (1)
  • Head Deer belly hair (spun, trimmed FLAT and broad)

How to tie it

  1. REAR: on the stinger hook, tie in two splayed deceiver-style feathers with a generous bunch of Flashabou sandwiched between them.
  2. Connect the stinger to the front shank with articulation wire so short-striking fish still get hooked.
  3. Build a flowing synthetic body (Ice Dub or UV Polar Chenille) and a full marabou/synthetic wing so the fly has a big, breathing baitfish profile.
  4. Spin two to three stacked clumps of deer belly hair at the front, packing each tight.
  5. Whip finish, then trim the deer hair into a BROAD, FLAT head, this flat-head profile is the whole point (it's a Dungeon-Silk Kitty hybrid) and makes the fly push water and hunt.
  6. Trim the bottom flat so it rides true and jinks side to side on the strip.
