Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 12-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (1 thin foam strip, two segments)
  • Dubbing Peacock ice dub (Ice Dub, sparse)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (2-3 rubber legs per side)
  • Wing post Hi-vis pink or white (Small tuft of poly yarn)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start the thread and lay a base back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a black foam strip at the bend, dub a small ball of Ice Dub, then fold the foam forward to form the rear gaster segment and bind at the midpoint.
  3. Add a rubber leg to each side at the waist.
  4. Dub a small thorax ball, then fold the foam forward again to form the front segment and bind behind the eye.
  5. Tie in a bright poly wing post on top for high visibility. This is the 'galactic' sighter that lets you track it on the water.
  6. Trim the foam and post to shape and whip finish under the post.
