Materials
Bead Black bead (3/32 inch)
Gills Mother of pearl (Magic Flash fibers)
Rib Blood red (glitter thread)
Body Grey polar fibre (glitter thread)
Finish (Deer Creek UV resin)
How to tie it
With the bead pushed back, tie the gills in out front. Grab a clump of mother of pearl Magic Flash, line the fibers up and twist them before mounting. The twist tames a long, unruly fiber and makes it behave like a gill tuft.
Whip finish, slide the 3/32 black bead up and reattach the thread, then start building a slim taper.
Tie the blood red glitter thread in behind the bead and run it back to the rear. That is the rib.
Tie the grey glitter thread in the same way and wind it forward to the bead. A small gap here and there is fine; the grey has black flecks through it, which reads as the blotchy dirty silver real chironomids often show.
Tie the body off, trim, then rib forward with the blood red and tie off behind the bead.
Whip finish the collar for durability and add a drop of UV resin over the body. Under water the UV in the gills stands out ten or more feet down.
