Classic Recipe

• Hook standard dry/wet fly, 14-16
• Thread orange silk silk / 8/0

Materials

• Tail Furnace cock hackle fibers (several)
• Body Orange tying silk (or red-brown seal's fur on orange silk) (as needed)
• Wings Dark Starling (1 pair)
• Hackle Furnace cock (1)

How to tie it

1. Start the orange silk and tie in a few furnace hackle fibers for the tail, about one shank length long.
2. Wind the orange silk (or dub a little red-brown seal's fur over it) to form a slim body up to the two-thirds mark.
3. Tie in a pair of dark starling wing slips, set upright and divided.
4. Tie in a furnace cock hackle behind the wings, the black-centred, brown-tipped furnace fibers read as a bug with a dark body and legs.
5. Wind the hackle 3-4 turns fore and aft of the wings and sweep it back.
6. Build a neat head and whip finish.
