Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard dry / emerger hook (TMC 100SP-BL or 2487), 10-14
  • Thread olive-dun 8/0 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Black calf tail (small clump)
  • Body Gray fly foam, 1/8 in strip (1 strip)
  • Hackle Olive-dyed grizzly saddle (1 feather)
  • Thorax Peacock herl (1-2 strands)
  • Wing Blue dun McFlylon (1 clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in a short black calf-tail tail at the bend.
  2. Tie in a strip of gray fly foam at the bend and wrap or fold it forward to build a segmented buoyant body up to the thorax.
  3. Tie in an upright post of blue dun McFlylon at the front of the body as the wing.
  4. Tie in an olive-grizzly saddle hackle at the base of the post.
  5. Tie in peacock herl and wrap a short thorax to the wing base.
  6. Wind the hackle parachute-style around the post in 4-6 turns and tie off. Foam body plus heavy hackle keep this big fly riding high in fast water.
  7. Whip finish and cement.
