Furimsky's Fluttering Foam Caddis

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Body Tan carapace (Superfine dubbing, sparse)
  • Back/wing Tan carapace (1 thin foam strip)
  • Underwing Natural case (Small clump deer hair)
  • Legs Barred brown rubber legs (1 rubber leg per side)
  • Head Natural case (Clump of deer hair, spun and trimmed)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start the thread and dub a slim tan body from the bend to the 60% mark.
  2. Tie in a tan foam strip at the 60% mark so the tag extends back over the body as a low tent-style wing.
  3. Stack a small clump of deer hair over the foam, tips reaching the bend, for the underwing.
  4. Tie a rubber leg to each side at the wing root, splayed out.
  5. Spin or stack a clump of deer hair in front of the wing and pack it tight for a buoyant head.
  6. Trim the deer hair head to a blocky caddis profile (flat underneath so it rides low, bulky on top to float and skate) then whip finish at the eye.
