Bead Black brass or tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
Gunmetal tinsel Gunmetal tinsel (Wrapped abdomen)
UTC Ultra Wire Silver wire (Small for #18-20, extra small for #22)
UTC Ultra Wire Red wire (Small for #18-20, extra small for #22)
UV resin (Loon UV Thin or Bone Dry) Clear uv resin (Optional, over the abdomen)
How to tie it
Slide the black bead onto the hook, small hole first, and seat it behind the eye. Mount the hook and start black 8/0 thread immediately behind the bead.
Run the thread back in touching turns to a point just above the barb, keeping the underbody slim. Everything about a size 22 depends on staying thin.
Tie in the silver and red Ultra Wire together at that point and bind them along the far side of the shank as you take the thread forward to the bead, so they add no bulk underneath.
Tie in the gunmetal tinsel at the back of the shank and bring the thread forward to the bead.
Wrap the gunmetal tinsel forward in touching, non-overlapping turns to form a smooth abdomen up to the bead. This underbody is the key to the pattern. It is what gives the fly its shine. Tie it off behind the bead and trim.
Counter-wrap the silver wire forward over the tinsel in evenly spaced open turns, tie off behind the bead and helicopter the tag off.
Follow with the red wire wound forward in the same direction as the silver, sitting between or alongside those turns, tie off behind the bead and break the tag off.
Build a small thread collar behind the bead, whip finish and trim.
Optional: coat the abdomen with a thin UV resin and cure it for a hard, glossy, durable body.
