Reference Recipe

• Hook 3XL long-shank / curved bass hook, 4 (2-6)
• Thread green 210 denier

Materials

• Deer hair (belly) Yellow calf tail dyed (several clumps)
• Deer hair (back) Frog green (several clumps)
• Rubber legs Green/brown/black rubber legs (2 sets (knotted))
• Stick-on eyes As desired eyes (1 pair)

How to tie it

1. Start the thread toward the rear of the shank (no full base needed, the hair floats it).
2. Spin a small clump of deer hair at the rear with two loose wraps then pull tight to flare it, and pluck any hair off the hook point.
3. Spin a slightly larger clump in front of the first, then pack it back tightly with your fingers; add a half hitch to secure.
4. Trim the rear/butt of this section to shape now, cutting the bottom close (keep the hook gap clear) and tapering it down toward the bend.
5. Tie in knotted rubber back legs at the sides, cheating them toward you so the next spun clump does not roll them out of place.
6. Continue spinning alternating yellow (belly) and green (back) clumps forward, packing each one tight, until you reach just behind the eye.
7. Whip finish at the eye, then trim the spun body to a frog shape: flat bottom, humped/rounded back, tapered head, keeping the hook gap open.
8. Tie or glue in the front rubber legs, glue on the stick-on eyes, and add cement to lock everything.
