Classic Recipe

  • Hook Kona TS4 or similar streamer, ridden inverted, 2-6
  • Thread Tan or pink 140-denier

Materials

  • Head Fish-Skull Mini Sculpin Helmet (1)
  • Tail/Antennae Arctic fox zonker fur (1 clump)
  • Flash Pearl Krystal Flash (4 strands)
  • Legs Silicone legs, barred (2-3 strands)
  • Body Arctic fox fur, wrapped or dubbed (as needed)
  • Eyes Fish-Skull Living Eyes (2)

How to tie it

  1. Test-fit the Mini Sculpin Helmet on the hook first, then start thread at the bend. The helmet goes on last and needs a bare hook eye.
  2. At the bend tie in a generous clump of arctic fox tail fur one and a half shank lengths long for the tail and antennae, with four strands of Krystal Flash over it. Arctic fox is the point of the fly. It pulses even when the fly sits still.
  3. X-wrap 2-3 silicone legs at the bend so they splay alongside the tail.
  4. Dub or wrap arctic fox fur forward up the shank in touching turns, picking it out as you go for a shaggy, translucent body. Stop with a small bare gap behind the hook eye.
  5. Build a small thread dam, whip finish, then coat the front wraps with glue and push the Mini Sculpin Helmet over the eye, flat side up so the fly rides hook point up.
  6. Press a Living Eye into the recess on each side of the helmet and secure with a drop of UV resin.
