  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry/nymph, straight eye, #8-#14
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Natural case (elk hair clump)
  • Body Tan carapace (2mm foam strip)
  • Body Hackle Brown hackle (1 saddle, palmered)
  • Wing Natural case (elk or deer hair)
  • Thorax Hackle Grizzly hackle (1 saddle)
  • Thorax Orange permanent marker (fine dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the 30% mark above the barb.
  2. Bind a short elk-hair tail no longer than half a shank, then tie in a brown saddle by the tip and a strip of tan foam at the tail base.
  3. Advance thread to the 65% mark, wrap the foam forward in touching turns for the abdomen, and lock it down.
  4. Palmer the brown hackle forward through the foam body in 5-6 open turns and secure at the 65% mark.
  5. Stack and tie in an elk-hair wing to the same point, tips reaching the tail, and trim the butts flat.
  6. Tie in a grizzly saddle, dub a thin orange thorax to the eye, then palmer the grizzly forward in 3-4 turns and tie off.
  7. Whip finish at the eye and a touch of head cement.
