Foam Spinner

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-20
  • Thread Rust, olive, or gray to match 8/0

Materials

  • Tails Dun/ginger material (2-3 Microfibetts, widely splayed)
  • Body Rust/olive/gray material (fine dubbing or thread, segmented)
  • Wings White/pearl wing flag (poly yarn or organza, spent flat)
  • Post/sighter Hi-vis foam (tiny foam tab on top)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Split and splay 2-3 Microfibett tails wide off the bend for balance.
  3. Dub or wrap a slim, segmented body forward to the 65% mark; use half the dubbing you think.
  4. Tie poly wing material across the shank and figure-8 it into a flat, spent-wing posture.
  5. Set a tiny hi-vis foam tab on top of the thorax for buoyancy and visibility.
  6. Dub a sparse thorax over the wing roots to lock everything down.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and trim the wings and foam tab to length.
