Foam Run Caddis

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Tan or brown 8/0

Materials

  • Body Tan/olive carapace (2mm foam strip, segmented)
  • Underbody Caddis tan (sparse dubbing)
  • Wing Natural deer or elk hair (tented clump)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (2-3 turns at head)
  • Sighter Orange permanent marker (small foam tab, optional)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Bind a tan foam strip and segment the rear body with 3-4 thread wraps to the 65% mark.
  3. Dub a thin caddis-tan thorax forward.
  4. Stack and tie a tented deer-hair wing over the back, tips reaching just past the bend.
  5. Wind 2-3 turns of brown hackle at the front for legs and float.
  6. Fold the foam forward to form the head and add an optional orange sighter on top.
  7. Whip finish and trim the hair and foam to a neat head.
