Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long nymph hook (e.g. Fulling Mill 1710), 10
  • Thread Black 6/0 or 140 denier

Materials

  • Rear underbody Olive dun material (sparse dry-fly dubbing)
  • Body Skwala olive (2mm High-Rise foam, cut to a stonefly shape)
  • Wing Light dun wing bud (poly/Ultra Dry yarn)
  • Back Black ostrich herl (1mm High-Rise foam)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (small round rubber)
  • Indicator Fluorescent orange egg sac (poly yarn tuft on top)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and dub a thin olive-dun underbody along the rear half of the shank.
  2. Bind a shaped 2mm olive foam body strip down the shank, segmenting it with thread wraps to the 55% mark.
  3. Tie in a light-dun poly wing flat over the back, tips reaching the bend.
  4. Add a strip of black 1mm foam over the top for the darker back, binding at the thorax.
  5. Figure-8 black rubber legs so they splay at the thorax.
  6. Dub a thin olive-dun thorax at the front and fold the back foam forward to form the head bump.
  7. Set a fluorescent-orange yarn indicator on top, whip finish, and trim to shape; mark segments with an indelible pen.
