Foam Parachute

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-18
  • Thread To match hatch (olive/gray/tan) 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Dun or ginger material (few hackle fibers or Microfibetts, splayed)
  • Body To match ep minnow head brush in (fine dubbing)
  • Post Hi-vis foam (small foam cylinder, upright)
  • Hackle Grizzly or dun hackle (parachute, 4-5 turns around foam post)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a few splayed tail fibers about one shank long.
  3. Stand a small foam cylinder upright at the 65% mark as the parachute post and anchor it with cross-wraps.
  4. Dub a slim tapered body forward to the post; use half the dubbing you think.
  5. Wind a hackle around the base of the foam post in 4-5 turns, working top to bottom.
  6. Secure the hackle tip, dub a touch of thorax, and whip finish behind the eye.
  7. Trim the foam post to a short, visible nub.
