Foam Mayfly Drake

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard or 1X-long dry-fly hook, 8-12
  • Thread Olive or gray 8/0

Materials

  • Extended body Olive/gray/brown material (2mm foam, cylinder, thread-segmented)
  • Tails Moose or micro fibetts (3 fibers, splayed)
  • Wing/post Dun microfibetts (poly yarn upright)
  • Hackle Grizzly or dun hackle (parachute, 4-5 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a foam extended body reaching past the bend, segment it with 4-5 thread wraps, and splay three tail fibers off the tip.
  3. Set an upright poly post at the 65% mark for the wing.
  4. Wind a grizzly parachute hackle around the base of the post in 4-5 turns.
  5. Dub a slim thorax around the post base if needed.
  6. Secure the hackle tip, sweep fibers out flat, and build a small head.
  7. Whip finish under the hackle and behind the eye.
