Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3X-long dry/nymph hook, 6-10
  • Thread Orange or tan 6/0

Materials

  • Body Tan over orange (salmonfly) or golden (2mm foam, layered and segmented)
  • Underbody Orange permanent marker (sparse dubbing)
  • Wing Natural elk or deer hair (tented clump)
  • Legs Barred orange/brown rubber legs (round rubber, 2 per side)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (foam tab on top)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the long hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Bind a wide foam strip along the shank and segment the rear body with 4-5 thread wraps to the 55% mark, showing the orange belly.
  3. Figure-8 two rubber legs per side at the thorax so they splay.
  4. Stack a clump of elk hair and tie it tented over the back, tips just past the bend.
  5. Fold the foam forward over the thorax to build a bulky head and bind behind the eye.
  6. Add an orange foam sighter tab on top for visibility.
  7. Whip finish and trim the hair and foam to a neat head.
