Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long dry-fly hook, 8-12
  • Thread Tan or yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Body Tan/yellow material (2mm foam, layered and segmented)
  • Underbody Yellow mcflylon (sparse dubbing, optional)
  • Wing Natural deer hair (tented clump)
  • Legs Yellow/black barred rubber legs (round rubber, knotted, 1 per side)
  • Indicator Orange/pink material (foam tab on top)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Bind a tan foam strip along the shank and segment the rear body with 3-4 thread wraps to the 60% mark.
  3. Stack a clump of deer hair and tie it tented over the body, tips reaching the bend.
  4. Knot a rubber leg per side and figure-8 them so they kick down and back like hopper legs.
  5. Fold the foam forward over the thorax to form the head and bind behind the eye.
  6. Set a bright foam sighter tab on top for visibility.
  7. Whip finish and trim the deer butts and foam to a blunt head.
