Foam Emerger

Emerger · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved emerger hook, 16-20
  • Thread Olive or gray 8/0

Materials

  • Trailing shuck Amber/brown material (few Z-lon fibers)
  • Abdomen Olive/gray material (sparse dubbing)
  • Rib Fine wire (optional, 4-5 turns)
  • Wing/back Gray flotation (1-2mm foam strip)
  • Thorax Gray flotation (sparse dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook and lay a thread base around the bend.
  2. Tie in a short amber Z-lon trailing shuck, about half a shank long.
  3. Dub a slim abdomen forward to the 60% mark; use half the dubbing you think.
  4. Tie in a narrow foam strip at the 60% mark pointing back.
  5. Dub a small thorax, then pull the foam forward to form a buoyant wing bump and bind behind the eye.
  6. Pick out a few thorax fibers for legs.
  7. Whip finish and trim the foam to a short tab that hangs the fly in the film.
