Foam Dragon Bluegill Edition

Dry Fly · Panfish · Largemouth Bass · Intermediate · 2 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long dry/streamer hook, 8-10
  • Thread Olive or black 6/0

Materials

  • Extended body Olive/blue material (2mm foam, cylindrical, ribbed with thread)
  • Underbody Olive ostrich herl (sparse dubbing)
  • Wings Clear/pearl material (organza or Krystal Flash, splayed flat)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (small round rubber, 2 per side)
  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (melted mono or foam dots)
  • Sighter Orange permanent marker (small foam tab)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Bind a foam cylinder extending well past the bend for the long dragonfly abdomen, segmenting it with 3-4 thread wraps.
  3. Dub a sparse thorax forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Tie splayed clear wings flat and wide across the top at the 60% mark to mimic a dragonfly at rest.
  5. Figure-8 two rubber legs per side so they kick out.
  6. Add mono or foam eyes at the head and fold the front foam back to form a bulky head.
  7. Set a small orange sighter tab on top, whip finish, and trim to shape.
