Body Arctic Wind ZMIX Frog dubbing (a thick cigar-shaped pinch)
Shellback Olive fly tying foam, 2mm sheet (one strip the width of the hook gape)
Wing H2O Pearl Baitfish, blue (a few strands, doubled)
Post McFlylon, white (2 small bunches)
Legs Silicone rubber legs, one green and one brown (2 strands)
Adhesive Gel superglue (a drop under the foam and at the head)
How to tie it
Mount the size 10 dry fly hook and lay a really good tight thread base all the way to the bend, the foam and the body both have to grip it, so hold the tag end to keep the wraps touching.
Dub the ZMIX Frog dubbing, which has long fibres in it, and wind a thick cigar-shaped body. Cicadas have fat abdomens, so build it heavier than you would for most dries. Do not crowd the front. Leave room for the foam and wing.
Trim the shaggy fibres off the top of the body and leave the shagginess underneath.
Cut a strip of 2mm olive foam roughly the width of the hook gape and taper the ends slightly.
Put a drop of gel superglue on the body before you tie the foam down. This is what stops the foam swinging round the hook in use.
Set the foam so a short tab sticks out behind the bend, wrap it down tight, then take the thread straight forward to just behind the eye, wrap there and bind back so the foam runs the length of the body. Twist it straight and wrap it down hard.
For the wing, cut a few strands of blue Pearl Baitfish, fold them double so you waste less, and cut again. Slide the bunch under the thread as you would rubber legs, centre it, and take a wrap.
Fold the bunch back, the fold splits it so the strands sit either side of the foam like wings, gather it and trim a little longer than the foam. Check from underneath that the wings sit open.
Cut two small bunches of white McFlylon, mix and even them up, and tie them in as an upright post about the same length as the wing.
Dub a little more of the frog dubbing over the thread wraps to tidy the head area, leaving some fibres sticking out.
Go right back behind the post, fold the foam back tight so the hook eye is clear, and wrap over it hard. Tighten, tighten again, two wraps.
Tie in one green and one brown rubber leg, one each side, a wrap for the first and two for the second, leaving them long.
Put a drop of superglue on the thread and whip finish by hand or with a tool, keeping the rubber legs out of the way.
Trim the foam short behind the head, trim the rubber legs a bit longer than the body, matching front and back. Do not pull on them while trimming or they will stretch. Add a drop of superglue underneath on the thread to finish.
