Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (2mm foam, gap-width strip)
  • Underbody Peacock ice dub (2-3 herls)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (small round rubber, 3 per side)
  • Indicator Hi-vis orange/chartreuse (small foam tab or poly tuft on top)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Bind a gap-width strip of black foam at the bend for the shellback.
  3. Tie in peacock herl and wrap forward to the 70% mark for a shiny underbody, then tie off.
  4. Figure-8 three rubber legs per side at the waist so they splay wide.
  5. Pull the foam forward over the herl and bind at the 70% mark, leaving a short head stub.
  6. Tie a bright hi-vis foam or poly tab on top of the thorax for visibility.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and trim the head foam short.
