Foam Back Emerger

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved emerger/midge hook, 18-24
  • Thread Black or gray 10/0 / 70 denier fine

Materials

  • Trailing shuck/abdomen Black ostrich herl (thread or fine dubbing)
  • Rib Fine silver wire (4-5 turns)
  • Shellback Gray or black wing slip (thin 1mm foam strip)
  • Thorax Gray flotation (sparse dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the tiny curved hook and lay a thread base around the bend.
  2. Bind in the fine wire rib and a thread or thinly dubbed slim abdomen up to the 60% mark.
  3. Counter-wrap the wire rib forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns to segment, then tie off.
  4. Tie in a narrow strip of gray foam at the 60% mark, pointing back.
  5. Dub a small, sparse thorax; use half the dubbing you think.
  6. Pull the foam forward over the thorax to form a buoyant wing-case bump and bind just behind the eye.
  7. Whip finish and trim the foam back to a short tab that floats the head in the film.
